Session Title: Towards a One Sustainable Health Institute: the urgent need for innovative One Sustainable Health governance
Format: Roundtable discussion
Date: Mon, Oct. 16, 2023 Time: 9:00-10:30 am
Host: Coalition One Europe for Global Health (OEGH)
Session background: We now find ourselves in an era of polycrisis. The world is on an unsustainable path, where health and well-being are increasingly threatened by climate changes, conflicts, poverty, pollution, antimicrobial resistance, and food and resource scarcity. It has become clear that we lack the multidimensional data and financing needed to govern across the fields, sectors and disciplines that correspond to interdependent environment, animal and human health. A holistic, multidisciplinary and multisector approach to health that encompasses OneHealth, global health, and sustainable financing for health is needed.
The One Europe for Global Health (OEGH) Coalition proposes institutionalizing One Sustainable Health (OSH) as an approach to bring together the needed data and financing that can develop the complex evidence needed to better support multi-level governance and policy action. We understand “institution”, to refer to the norms, values, processes, capacities and structures needed to guide OSH policy and practice. We recognize this necessarily includes, but is not limited to, “bricks and mortar” organizations. In a context of multiple, overlapping and related global threats we must seek new forms of governance, including networked systems of multidisciplinary, multifunctional and multi-located organizations brought together under a unified mandate.
Session objective: The objective of this strategic roundtable is to discuss in-depth the development of OSH institutionalizing, financing, and governance. Specifically, the roundtable discussion will invite expert insights from diverse stakeholders to foster a coherent and comprehensive integrated approach, in order to achieve sustainable health outcomes for all, there is a need to leverage interdependencies between environment, animal and human health.

One Europe for Global Health Coalition
The mission of the One Europe for Global Health coalition is to improve and integrate Global Health and One Health priorities into European policies, strategies and actions by engaging European civil society and convening actors from all sectors. The Covid-19 pandemic has made it clear that, with ever-increasing global interconnectedness, we can no longer view our health in isolation. Healthy living is only possible on a healthy planet. This includes all life on Earth: from plants to animals to humans – everywhere. We must work together to develop and implement a One Health and Global Health strategy that recognizes the interdependency of all living things and acknowledges a healthy environment as a global common.
