ONE EUROPE FOR GLOBAL HEALTH

OEGH is a civil society coalition that bundles the voices from a diversity of professional organizations and citizens across Europe and around the world.

OEGH stems from the mobilisation of several members who met in Lyon on the occasion of the European Ministers of Health and Foreign Affairs meeting during the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union in February 2022.

The resulting “One Europe for Global Health Declaration” (initially “Lyon Declaration for a European Health Union”), urges European stakeholders in Global Health and One Health to responsibly take action and commit to:

Commitment

Make a long-term commitment to future generations, to enhance preparedness and build more resilient societies

Glocal Approach

Think and act globally, regionally and locally – a “glocal” approach

Solidarity

Come together in equity and solidarity within Europe and beyond

Cooperation

Limit silos with more intersectoral cooperation

Good Governance

Commit to good governance for a European Health Union

One Europe for Global Health.

OEGH VISION | MISSION | CORE VALUES

VISION

The coalition considers Europe in its two dimensions: a broader geographical dimension for health without borders, and a political dimension, with the European Union and their member states.

Health – Planetary, animal and human – is at the core of many sectors and therefore must be integrated across all actions and be a top priority in European policy. Investing in health and sustainable development is crucial for the safety and wellbeing of not only European citizens but people around the world.

Historically, and particularly considering recent global politics, Europe has the major responsibility and capacity to improve the state of Global Health and the health of the planet. Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and an intersectoral approach at all levels has become an urgent necessity in order to build a European Health Union for the global population and for our contributions to Global Health and One Health. This will be done by building equitable partnerships between Europe and beyond with a particular consideration of Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

KEY GOALS

Support the all-inclusive and scientific view that health is more than medicine and that improving Global Health includes taking actions to achieve all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with an emphasis on SDG 3: “Good Health and Well-being,” SDG 1: “No Poverty,” SDG 13: “Climate Action,” SDG 16: “Peace and Justice” and SDG 17: “Partnership for the Goals.”

Improve the future governance and funding of European health programs integrating One Health considerations, in order to overcome fragmentation on national, regional and global levels. This will be accomplished by helping establish a European Health Institution addressing all aspects of health research, patient care and disease prevention, including support and coordination at the European and global level.

MAIN ACTIONS

The main action of the coalition is to assemble a diversity of organizations by leveraging the networks of our members to build on the principle of “One Europe for Health“, encompassing both One Health and Global Health priorities. This is achieved by organizing events, forums and communication for actors and decision makers.

An event is to be organized in each country hosting the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. After the inaugural event organized in Lyon, the coalition will organize events in Berlin, Prague, Stockholm, Madrid and beyond, generating or refining amendments to reflect the host-state priorities.
